Chile Pepper Festival Turns Agri Park Into a Runner’s Weekend

Every fall, you’ll find Agri Park turned into a sea of runners when the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival takes over the University of Arkansas course. Coach Bucknam calls it the Super Bowl of cross country. After nearly four decades of races here, that’s not a stretch.

What’s Running When

Show up Friday for the warm-up. You’ll catch the course open for practice first, then festival grounds open for packet pickup, a course preview, and the merchandise tent. Junior high runners take over mid-afternoon, and you can close out the night with the Tom Lewis 1 Mile Pepper Dash, open to any age that wants to run it.

Saturday is where it gets serious. Get there early for packet pickup, then watch or run the Godpepper 4K and 8K community races as they kick things off. Senior high, college, and open division heats fill the rest of the morning and into the afternoon, wrapping with the Boy’s Open 5K.

A Course Built for Racing

Grass and cinder, three distinct sections, one wide open start. You’ll spread across a broad field that narrows around the quarter-mile mark, then near the half-mile mark the course turns and climbs an incline before easing downhill to the mile marker. From there each race finds its own line through Razorback Meadow, a flatter open stretch, before the trail rises again along the pond’s edge. Trees shade the finish chute, tucked off from the starting area, where you’ll close it out with a sprint through the crowd.

What It Costs

Running solo: Sign up for the Tom Lewis 1 Mile Pepper Dash for a flat $10, open to any age. You’ll pay $25 for the Godpepper 4K through August 31, $35 through October 1, and $45 race weekend. The 8K runs $35, $45, and $55 on that same schedule. Add a VIP upgrade for $75 to $95 depending on how early you sign up, or grab a VIP spectator pass for $65 through October 1 or $75 race weekend, which gets you a t-shirt, swag bag, preferred parking, and a VIP tent.

Bringing a team: Register an El Caliente high school varsity team and you’ll pay $100 per team for up to 8 athletes, split across two heats. Open high school and junior high teams pay that same $100 for up to 20 athletes, then $3 for each additional runner, or $25 per athlete if your squad only has 1 to 3 runners. College and open teams pay $300 for up to 7 athletes, then $35 per additional runner, and if you’re running unattached at the college level you can enter for $60 as long as you meet the qualifying time. Team registration opens July 1 and closes September 25, 2026.

Good to Know Before You Register

You won’t get a refund on entry fees since Chile Pepper counts them as donations to the nonprofit, for community races and full teams alike. New this year, you can reserve a team tent through RevelXP, set up right behind the start line, with three package options to choose from. Book your stay at the new Moxy Hotel in downtown Fayetteville too, the festival’s official hotel partner, which is offering special rates for teams and guests.

Rules to Know Before You Go

Chile Pepper runs on University of Arkansas Experimental Farm land, so the rules are strict: leave pets and drones at home. If you’re parking for a Saturday high school team, you’ll be directed near the Washington County Fairgrounds, with bus drop-off at Agri Park off Garland Avenue. Race staff, credentialed volunteers, and VIP 4K/8K participants get in through the Quality Lane gate, or wherever officials point you.

You’ll race with a timing chip tied to your shoelace. Chips get collected at the finish, and you’ll need to turn in any unused ones at the finish line area or registration tent too, or your school could get charged for them. That part’s on the coaches.

Running for a Cause

The money stays local. Your entry helps fund public high school cross country programs across Benton, Washington, Carroll, and Madison counties, more than 23 schools and counting. Now in its 38th year, Chile Pepper has raised over $1,000,000 for those programs.
