Friday Night Gets an Artsy Upgrade at Mount Sequoyah
If your Friday could use a creative boost, Mount Sequoyah has you covered. On August 8th, three wildly different artists are converging in Sequoyah Hall for an opening that promises everything from upcycled cardboard sculptures to portraits made entirely of wool.
When Art Gets Playful
The exhibit opens at 6:00 PM on Friday, August 8th at Mount Sequoyah Center, and runs for two hours of wine-sipping, art-gazing, and artist-mingling. But this isn’t your typical gallery crowd stroking their chins at abstract shapes they pretend to understand.
Dani Ives creates striking, wool-based portraits using a unique technique called needle felting — or as she affectionately calls it, Painting with Wool.
Shannon P. Smith is a Black interdisciplinary artist exploring photography and sculpture through analog and alternative processes, alongside woodworking. Originally from Detroit and currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Arkansas, Smith’s work digs into time’s slippery nature with a blend of nostalgia and sharp introspection.
Then there’s Melissa Milton, a mixed-media artist best known for her one-of-a-kind sculptures crafted from upcycled cardboard. Her work has been featured in British Vogue, British GQ, Studio Visit, At Home in Arkansas, and American Mensa magazines. In 2023, she won a City of Fayetteville Public Art competition, proving that sometimes the most unexpected materials make the biggest statements.
