The Buffalo Headwaters Challenge Is Part Race, Part Campfire Party
The Buffalo Headwaters Challenge is part race, part outdoor adventure, and part excuse to eat grilled cheese in the woods while a DJ plays your favorite tracks. The 21st annual BHC returns to Red Star with the same formula that’s worked for two decades: make it challenging enough to feel accomplished, but fun enough that you’ll want to come back next year.

Five Meals, One Fire Tower Legend
You’ll eat five times during the Buffalo Headwaters Challenge, which is a smart move when you’re spending the day on trails. The highlight is the fire tower grilled cheese and tomato soup. Ask anyone who’s done this event before and they’ll tell you it’s worth showing up for that alone.
The challenge routes work for both bikes and runners, and between those you’ll find live music, DJs set up in the woods, and enough happening to keep the day interesting. Everyone gets event socks and a finisher’s patch to take home.
More Than Just Miles
There’s also a gravel ride if you want to skip the competitive part and just enjoy the terrain. Yoga sessions happen throughout the day for when your muscles need a break. Red Star has some seriously good backcountry, and the BHC gives you a chance to see it on foot, on a bike, and while recovering with food.
The Ozark Off-Road Cyclists have been running this event for 21 years now. The routes are tough but doable, the atmosphere stays friendly whether you’re a regular or trying it for the first time, and the whole thing feels more like a day out with people who like being outside than a strict race.
Registration is open. Bring your bike, your running shoes, or show up for the grilled cheese.
