37 North Expeditions has crafted the perfect autumn day trip that captures everything magical about fall in Northwest Arkansas. You’ll start your morning aboard a historic train, then finish with boots on the ground at one of the state’s most iconic overlooks.
Rolling Through the Boston Mountains
The adventure kicks off with a 70-mile round-trip train ride that winds through the rugged Boston Mountains. This route isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about the journey itself. You’ll cross three dramatic valley trestles and roll through the historic 1,700-foot Winslow Tunnel while taking in sweeping views of the Ozarks painted in autumn’s finest colors.
The train cars offer comfortable seating and panoramic windows, making every mile a photo opportunity. As you chug along the rails, the landscape unfolds like a living postcard with rolling hills dressed in fiery reds, bright oranges, and golden yellows.
Yellow Rock Overlook
After you’ve had your fill of train views, the adventure continues at Devil’s Den State Park with the Yellow Rock Overlook Trail. This 2.7-mile loop trail rates as easy to moderate, making it accessible for most fitness levels while still offering a rewarding challenge.
The payoff at the end is a wide-open view of the Lee Creek Valley. Yellow Rock Overlook is considered one of Arkansas’s most iconic fall viewing spots.
