Dr. Compton Native Tree & Plant Sale Returns to Bentonville
Wheelbarrows loaded with milkweed, coneflower, and baby oak trees are about to take over a parking lot, every plant nurtured by the sale’s own expert horticulture team. Vines like Coral Honeysuckle and Passion Vine will be climbing trellises right next to shade-loving ferns such as Christmas Fern and Walking Fern, giving you options well beyond the usual tree and shrub picks.

New Native Varieties To Watch For
This year’s sale flags several plants as new additions, so keep an eye out for Purple Coneflower, Downy Wood Mint, Drummond’s Aster, and Tall Thimbleweed in the perennial rows. The tree section adds Sourwood and Red Buckeye to its 1-gallon lineup and Willow Oak to the 3-gallon lineup, and the shrub tables bring in Downy Serviceberry and Flameleaf Sumac. If you already have a full native bed and just want to fill gaps, these are the ones to check first.
What Each Price Tier Gets You
At the top end, $90 gets you a 15-gallon Red Maple, the only tree offered at that size. Drop to 3-gallon and your $35 covers Bald Cypress, Black Gum, Red Maple, Red Oak, Redbud, Sugar Maple, Swamp Chestnut Oak, Tulip Poplar, or Willow Oak. At $15, your options span 1-gallon trees and shrubs alike, from Paw Paw to Carolina Allspice.
If you want quart perennials or ornamental grasses, you pay $10 no matter which one you pick, so Blazing Star Liatris, Butterfly Milkweed, Little Bluestem Grass, and Pink Muhly Grass are all priced the same. For $75, a tray gets you multiple plants grouped together instead of picking one at a time. The pollinator tray gets you Purple Coneflower, Swamp Coneflower, and Eastern Bluestar, while the erosion control tray pairs Cherokee Sedge with Mountain Mint.
The sale itself is a fundraiser that supports Compton Gardens & Arboretum, so every plant you take home ties back to that mission.
