Spring Break Just Got a History Lesson at Rogers Historical Museum

Skip the screen time this spring break and head to Rogers Historical Museum for Colonial Days, a week of hands-on activities that brings 18th century America to life for kids ages 6–12.

The museum is kicking off a year-long celebration of America’s 250th anniversary with daily sessions that dig into what childhood looked like in colonial times, and yes, there’s building involved.

What’s on the Schedule

Yo-Yos | Tuesday, March 24 | 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, or 11:00 AM | 45 minutes
Long before plastic and neon, yo-yos were known as “quiz” toys, hand-carved from wood or fashioned from farm scraps and considered a serious test of skill and physics. Your kids will dig into the history of this colonial favorite and build their very own classic yo-yo to take home.

Off the Sheep | Wednesday, March 25 | 10:00 AM or 1:00 PM | 90 minutes
Colonial toys were often made from farm byproducts like wool, meaning kids were learning to handle the materials they’d eventually process as adults. Guest presenter Eddon Boyd from the Brick Street Handspinners will walk your kids through how raw fleece gets processed by hand before it can be felted or woven into cloth. They’ll sort the wool themselves, figuring out what can be used and what gets tossed.

Jacob’s Ladder | Thursday, March 26 | 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, or 11:00 AM | 45 minutes
Before video games, kids on the American frontier were captivated by the Jacob’s Ladder, an optical illusion flip toy made from wood and ribbon. Your kids will figure out how it works and build their own to take home.

Book your session at the Rogers Historical Museum website before spots fill up.
