Crystal Bridges Weaves Together 250 Years of American Story
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art turns 250 years of the country’s history into one walk through a single gallery with “America 250: Common Threads.” Quilts hang near marble busts, and documents older than the museum itself share space with contemporary artwork responding to them. You’re meant to wander and see how two and a half centuries sit together in one room.

What You’ll Actually See
An early engraving of the Declaration of Independence anchors the show, surrounded by historic documents, textiles, paintings, and toys spanning from 1776 to today. Crystal Bridges organized the exhibition in partnership with the American Folk Art Museum. Walk the gallery and you’ll start noticing the same American symbols on repeat: George Washington’s face changes from room to room, eagles show up on books, baskets, and woven coverlets, and flags turn into quilts and documentation of the moon landing. Hundreds of 20th century patriotic snapshots hang near souvenirs collected from America’s Centennial celebration in 1876, so you can compare how two different generations marked the same kind of milestone.
Watch Quilters Work in Real Time
During the run of the exhibition, local quilters and quilting guilds work right in the galleries, piecing together quilt squares made by K-12 students from across Arkansas. Artist Basil Kincaid designed the pattern the students followed. The project ties into Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, presented by Craft in America.
Featured Artists and Pieces to Find
Robert Colescott’s 1980 “Miss Liberty,” a life-size portrait draped in a patchwork of American flags, hangs alongside work from Kay WalkingStick and Howard Finster, each artist taking their own pass at national symbols. Marie Watt’s woven blanket sculpture, built from reclaimed wool blankets stacked over eleven feet high, sits near Vanessa German’s mixed media assemblage exploring public health and psychosis and Mari Hernandez’s portrait titled “Colonizer.” On the historic side, look for a marble bust of Alexander Hamilton and a copy of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense,” printed in Philadelphia the same year the country declared independence. Colescott’s “Miss Liberty” is on loan from Art Bridges.
