Fall Foliage Train Ride and Overlook Rolls Through the Boston Mountains from Bentonville

Seventy miles of Boston Mountains, three valley trestles, and a 1,700-foot tunnel, and the most strenuous part of your day is boarding the train. 37 North Expeditions is running its fall foliage train trip out of Bentonville twice this November. It’s leaf peeping for anyone who’d rather keep their boots clean.

Rolling Out of Bentonville Before Your Coffee Kicks In

Be at The Motto by 9 a.m. The group heads for the railway station at 9:15 and pulls in at 10:30, leaving half an hour of breathing room before the train departs at 11. Pack your own lunch. You’ll eat it on the train, which beats a desk salad by about 70 miles.

Three Trestles and the Winslow Tunnel

The 70-mile round trip winds through the Boston Mountain range and rolls back into the station at 2:15 p.m. Between stretches of fall color, watch for the three valley trestles and the 1,700-foot-long Winslow Tunnel, the one part of the ride where the view is the same with your eyes closed.

Overlook Nothing at Artist Point

From the station, a scenic drive through the Ozarks gets you to Artist Point at 3 p.m. You get sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys and 45 minutes to photograph every last leaf, so charge your phone or camera before you leave the house. The group heads out at 3:45 and is back at The Motto by 4:45.

The pace stays relaxed all day, and nobody’s asking you to summit anything. One catch: the trip only runs if at least nine people sign up. Better start recruiting your leaf-peeping crew now!

See you there, NWA.
